<h3>Postmarks</h3>
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a
separate set of postmarks for each name and/or commissioning period. Within each set,
the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one
postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of
earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

American Campaign Medal - Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 1 star - World War II Victory Medal - Navy Occupation Service Medal<br/><br/>
'''NAMESAKE''' - Joseph Edward Connolly USN/USMC (June 1 1904 - October 9 1942)<br/>
Connolly served in the Navy 1927-30 before enlisting in the Marine Corps March 9 1936. Connolly attained the grade of Corporal by 1942 and took part in the assault on Guadalcanal, the first American amphibious operation of the war. During the bitter fight for the island, Connolly and his men bore the brunt of a heavy Japanese assault along the Matanikau River October 9 1942. For his extraordinary bravery in this action Corporal Connolly received the Navy Cross posthumously. Describing his gallantry, his citation reads in part: "Fighting desperately in hand-to-hand combat against the overwhelming hostile forces, Corporal Connolly refused to be dislodged from his position, and after exacting a tremendous toll of the enemy, heroically died at his post."
