USAT/USNS GEORGE W. GOETHALS earned the American Campaign Medal, the Europe-Africa- Middle East Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the National Defense Service Medal during her combined Army/Navy career.<br/><br/>
'''NAMESAKE''' - General George W. Goethals, USA (29 June 1858 – 21 January 1928)<br/>        Goethals was a United States Army General and civil engineer, best known for his administration and supervision of the construction and the opening of the Panama Canal. He was the State Engineer of New Jersey and the Acting Quartermaster General of the United States Army.<br/><br/>
Two ships were named in his honor - USAT/USNS George W. Goethals T-AP-182 and US Army Corps of Engineers Dredge Goethals (1937-1982).
