USS ADMIRAL H. T. MAYO / GENERAL NELSON M. WALKER earned the American Campaign Medal, the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Korean Service Medal w/ 3 Campaign stars, the Vietnam Service Medal w/ 3 Campaign stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal during her Naval career.<br/><br/>
'''NAMESAKE''' - Admiral Henry Thomas Mayo, USN (8 December 1856 – 23 February 1937)<br/>        Mayo graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1876 and he experienced a variety of naval duties including coastal survey. During the Spanish–American War he served in the gunboat USS Bennington PG-4 off the west coast of North America.<br/>        
About 1909 he was in command of the cruiser USS Albany as she cruised in Central American waters protecting United States citizens and interests as part of the Special Service Squadron.<br/>        
Appointed Rear Admiral in 1913, he commanded the naval squadron involved in the Tampico incident of 9 April 1914. His demands for vindication of national honor further accentuated the tense relations with Mexico.<br/>        
Promoted to Vice Admiral in June 1915, as the new Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet, he received the rank of Admiral 19 June 1916. For his organization and support of World War I U.S. Naval Forces both in American and European waters, he was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal and various foreign decorations. He evidenced foresight in urging the postwar development of fleet aviation.<br/>        
Admiral Mayo retired 28 February 1921, and, for four years, served as Governor of the Philadelphia Naval Home. He retained his commission as an Admiral by a 1930 Act of Congress.<br/><br/>
Two ships of the US Navy have been named in his honor - USS Admiral H. T. Mayo AP-125 and [[MAYO_DD_422_ | USS Mayo DD-422]]<br/><br/>

'''NAMESAKE''' - Brigadier General Nelson Macy Walker, USA (27 September 1891 - 10 July 1944)<br/>        Walker attended Officers Training Camp, Plattsburg, N.Y., and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Infantry Reserve 15 August 1917. He went to France with the 47th Infantry Regiment in April 1918 and participated in the Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. He was wounded in action 5 July 1918. He continued action with the American forces in Germany until July 1919 when he returned to the United States. During the next 18 years he was stationed at various Army posts in the United States. From July 1937 until August 1938, he served with the 15th Infantry in Tientsin, China. After the entry of the United States into World War II, he was assigned to Headquarters, Army Ground Forces, in Washington, D.C. Promoted Brigadier General 11 September 1942, he became Assistant Division Commander, 8th Infantry Division, in November 1943. He was killed in France 10 July 1944 during the invasion of Western Europe.
