'''NAMESAKE''' - Captain Percival Drayton, USN born 25 August 1812 in Charleston, S.C., was appointed a Midshipman 1 December 1827. During the Civil War, he commanded USS Pocahontas in the expedition against Port Royal, S.C., in October 1861. As Fleet Captain of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, Drayton served gallantly in command of Admiral D. G. Farragut's flagship USS Hartford during the Battle of Mobile Bay, 5 August 1864. He was appointed Chief of the Bureau of Navigation in April 1865 and died in that post 4 August 1865.<br/><br/>
The ships sponsor was Miss E. G. Drayton, niece of Captain Drayton.<br/><br/>
Two ships of the US Navy have been named in his honor - USS Drayton Destroyer No. 23 and [[DRAYTON_DD_366_ | USS Drayton DD-366]]
