USS SAN JACINTO has earned the Joint Meritorious Unit Award Ribbon (2 awards), the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon (2 awards), the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon (5 awards), the Navy Battle "E" Ribbon (11 awards), the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with 2 bronze stars, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with two bronze stars, the Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal with 2 bronze stars, the Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal with 4 bronze stars, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia) and the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) during her career as of 2015.

NAMESAKE - Named for the Battle of the San Jacinto River, fought on April 21, 1836 the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Led by General Sam Houston, the outnumbered Texas Army engaged and defeated Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna in a fight that lasted just 18 minutes, in present-day Harris County, Texas.

Three ships of the US Navy have borne the name SAN JACINTO - USS San Jacinto (1850 Screw Frigate), USS San Jacinto CVL-30 and USS San Jacinto CG-56.

The ships sponsor is Dr. Wendy L. Gramm, wife of Senator William P. Gramm of Texas.
