Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    German Cruiser (War Prize)
    Admiral Hipper Class Heavy Cruiser
    Keel Laid April 26 1936 - Launched August 20 1938

  1. KRIEGSMARINE PRINZ EUGEN
    Commissioned August 1 1940
    Surrendered to British Forces at Copenhagen, Denmark May 7 1945

  2. USS PRINZ EUGEN IX-300
    Acquired by US Navy January 13 1946 and placed in service
    Used as a target for an atomic test at Bikini Atoll July 25 1946
    After being towed to Kwajalein began to list and capsized and sunk at Enubju, Kwajalein Atoll, December 22 1946.

Naval Covers

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

NAMESAKE - Named after François-Eugène, Prince of Savoy-Carignan (October 18 1663 – April 21 1736), (Prinz Eugen in German).
