Sold 1926 to the Los Angeles Steamship Co. and renamed

Suffered several fires while docked at Honolulu and was eventually declared a total loss
Sold August 24, 1933 for scrap

 

Conflicting History Data

NavSource lists the name WHITE PALACE as an incarnation of the ship while operated by the American Palestine Line.

The Wikipedia page for USS Princess Matoika does not list the name WHITE PALACE although it does show that the ship was owned by American Palestine Line in 1924.

The Wikipedia page for American Palestine Line has the text: "The line had originally planned to change the name of the liner to White Palace, but that was never brought about." and lists the source as the book Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremen, 1857–1970: History, Fleet, Ship Mails (1994) by Edwin Drechsel.

Lloyd’s Register of Shipping 1927 Steamers has an entry for White Palace but with (what appears to be) the notation: "Should be President Arthur". Alas, the referenced supplement page is not present in the scanned book.

Finally, the RootsWeb page for USS Princess Matoika says: "Her intended name was White Palace but her name remained President Arthur."

 

Naval Covers

Postmarks

Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
