Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

Other Information

USS COONER earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the European-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal during her Naval career.

NAMESAKE - Named in Honor of Ensign Bunyan Randolph Cooner (February 27 1914 - June 16 1942).
Ensign Cooner won The Navy Cross for gallant service in The Battle of Midway, participating in vigorous and repeated attacks against Japanese warships June 4-6 1942, while attached to Bombing Squadron 3 on USS SARATOGA CV-3. Ensign Cooner was killed in a plane crash during flight operations out of NAS Pearl Harbor on June 16 1942
