Ship Name and Designation History

This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.

    Spruance Class Destroyer
    Keel Laid November 3 1975 - Launched July 23 1977

  1. USS MOOSBRUGGER DD-980
    Commissioned December 16 1978 - Decommissioned December 15 2000

    Stricken April 25 2006
Currently undergoing scrapping at Brownsville, TX (2006)

Naval Covers

This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).

Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

  1. USS Moosbrugger DD-980 Covers Page 1    (1978-1989)

Postmarks

This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.

A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.

>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the existing example.

Other Information

NAMESAKE - Vice Admiral Frederick Moosbrugger, USN (October 9 1900 - 1974).
Moosbrugger was an officer of the United States Navy eventually attaining the rank of Vice Admiral. He is best known for his service in World War II as a highly successful commander of destroyer squadrons.
Of special note is the Battle of Vella Gulf in the South Pacific during World War II. The then-Commander Moosbrugger led his ships into exceedingly close range against Japanese naval forces; took the enemy by surprise, and delivered a devastating torpedo attack, thereby annihilating the hostile force. For this action, he was awarded the Navy Cross.
Later in World War II, he was commander of a group of ships screening the Joint Expeditionary Force during the assaults on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. His group checked repeated attempts by enemy units, including submarines and suicide craft, to reach U.S. and allied attack forces. Then-Captain Moosbrugger was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for this service.
