Ship Name and Designation History
This section lists the names and designations that the ship had during its lifetime. The list is in chronological order.
Keel Laid 5 May 1983 - Launched and Christened 5 November 1983 |
This section lists active links to the pages displaying covers associated with the ship. There should be a separate set of pages for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Covers should be presented in chronological order (or as best as can be determined).
Since a ship may have many covers, they may be split among many pages so it doesn't take forever for the pages to load. Each page link should be accompanied by a date range for covers on that page.

Postmarks
This section lists examples of the postmarks used by the ship. There should be a separate set of postmarks for each incarnation of the ship (ie, for each entry in the "Ship Name and Designation History" section). Within each set, the postmarks should be listed in order of their classification type. If more than one postmark has the same classification, then they should be further sorted by date of earliest known usage.
A postmark should not be included unless accompanied by a close-up image and/or an
image of a cover showing that postmark. Date ranges MUST be based ONLY ON COVERS IN
THE MUSEUM and are expected to change as more covers are added.
>>> If you have a better example for any of the postmarks, please feel free to replace the
existing example.

Other Information
NAMESAKE - Commander Jesse Junior Taylor, USN (16 January 1925 - 17 November 1965)
Taylor was born in Wichita, Kansas, graduated high school, and enlisted in the Navy on 26 October 1942. He joined Bombing Squadron 11 (VB-11) as an aviation radioman and was deployed with the squadron to the carrier Hornet in September 1944. He served with VB-11 until discharged from the Navy on 5 February 1946. Following his return to civilian life, he attended college and worked for several private concerns in the Los Angeles area. He returned to college in 1950 and also enlisted in the Naval Reserve shortly after hostilities broke out in Korea.
Reporting for duty in January 1951, Taylor underwent flight training and was soon commissioned and designated a naval aviator. He went on to join Composite Squadron Four in January 1953, then served as NROTC instructor on the Los Angeles campus of the University of California. 1956 saw Taylor as a flight instructor at Whiting Field, Milton, Fla.. and then joined the staff of Chief of Naval Air Training at NAS Pensacola. After Pensacola, Taylor journeyed to England to attend the Empire Test Pilot's School at Farmborough. He then rejoining the fleet with Fighter Squadron 174. Promoted to lieutenant commander while serving with the squadron, he attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island for a year and next represented the Bureau of Naval Weapons at St. Louis, Mo.
In July 1965, Lcdr Taylor was assigned to Air Wing 16 aboard USS Oriskany CVA 34, and sailed to the western Pacific. On 17 November 1965, Cdr Taylor was flying his Skyraider attacking a key bridge near Haiphong. Hearing about another pilot’s plight after being shot down, he took command of the rescue effort, proceeded to the scene and found the downed pilot. He attacked the anti-aircraft gun sites, but because of fire in his own aircraft, he was forced to break off the attack. Rather than abandoning his plane in enemy territory, he tried to make the Gulf of Tonkin, but his plane crashed before he could eject. Commander Taylor was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
