Thresher class (No reported postmarks)
Launched July 1, 1961
Upper: Launch cover, sponsored by Mare Island Naval Shipyard Supervisors Association,
shipyard machine postmark.
Lower: Commissioning cover, ship's cachet and corner card, shipyard handstamp postmark.
Thresher class nuclear attack submarine, length 279', displacement 4,300 tons.
Armed with torpedoes and SUBROC, an anti-submarine missile.
Commissioned 1962, served with the Pacific Fleet.
First submarine to successfully fire SUBROC March 28, 1963.
Later converted to fire the Harpoon anti-ship missile.
Decommissioned June 12, 1991 and completely scrapped/recycled May 1993.
